Utah State University’s Shingo Institute, of which Lear board member Donald Runkle is an Academy member, held a Shingo Prize conference in León, Guanajuato, Mexico. The Institute’s work is based on the work and writings of Dr. Shigeo Shingo (1909-90), a Japanese industrial engineer who is considered the world’s leading expert on manufacturing practices and the Toyota Production System.
Lear’s Silao Plant hosted Shingo Institute facilitator Jorge Mejía in a training session on the Shingo Model with the “Discovery Excellence” theme. During the first two days of instruction, Lear team members from Silao, Hermosillo, Toluca and San Luis Potosi were educated on the Shingo Model to achieve operational excellence, its three levels of business transformation including Principles, Systems and Tools and Techniques. The ultimate goal when pursuing the Shingo Model is cultural transformation. By integrating the operational excellence principles across an enterprise, adherents seek cultural transformation in creating a complete, systemic view that leads to consistent results and establishes a roadmap based on universal and timeless principles.
Lear Silao also hosted a plant visit from 50 of the Shingo conference participants from companies such as Daimler, Comex, Visteon, Tekfor and others, who enjoyed Lear’s illustration of operational excellence and provided an opportunity to network with these other organizations with the same passion for continuous improvement.The conference’s final two days, which included interactive meetings to share ideas, experiences and success stories, was onsite at the Lensys Training Center also located in León. Octavio De La Rosa Villafranca (Silao Plant Mgr.) spoke to the audience on Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement.
“It was a good event based on a leading philosophy,” Octavio added, “and we did exercises at Lear Silao to identify ideal behaviors with next steps planned to do a Shingo assessment on how we are progressing.”

Dr. Shingo wrote about the ideas of ensuring quality at the source, flowing value to customers, working with zero inventories, rapidly setting up machines through the system of “single-minute exchange of dies” (SMED) and going to the actual workplace to understand the real world situation (known as “going to gemba”).

Through our involvement, we aim to raise awareness about the promising future of the Motor City, as well as its global influence, which we are thankful to participate in.
This year, we will be leading the parade down Woodward Avenue, on our inaugural float, which not only showcases pride in Detroit, but also the influence the city has worldwide. Built in partnership with The Parade Company, our design features an iconic Detroit symbol, along with representations from the 36 countries where our company does business.
“Detroit influences communities around the world, from the sounds of Motown to our automotive industry,” says Matthew Simoncini, President and CEO of Lear Corporation, “We wanted to represent that this year in America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.”
Dubbed as a “Detroit Good Kid”, Simoncini has succeeded in creating what he set out to do. The float itself is one of the largest ever built by The Parade Company. It includes historic symbols ranging from the Eiffel Tower to the Spirit of Detroit, showcasing the international influence of our automotive industry.
