Philippines Special Community Service to Celebrate Lear’s 100 Year Anniversary

Deciding one excellent way to celebrate Lear's 100th anniversary would be helping the community, the Lear Cebu team led by Amabel Magnolia Abella (HR Dir.) visited the mountains of Barangay Adlaon, Busay, in Cebu, Philippines, and planted 1500 coffee seedlings last month. In an effort to highlight the benefits of coffee farming to the environment, Lear Cebu continues to plant coffee seedlings of Arabica and Robusta in this mountain area as a corporate social responsibility project initiated by the Environment, Health and Safety team.

The volunteers went up the sides of the mountains to plant the seedlings and then treated to an aromatic delight as local farmers offered them freshly brewed coffee harvested from the site. The main objectives of this continuing Social Reforestation Program include assuring coffee tree growth and enhancing income growth possibilities of the farmer beneficiaries progressing through coffee harvesting after 18 months of cultivation.

In partnership with a private, non-profit organization, the Pollution Control Association of the Philippines, Incorporated Region 7 (PCAPI-7) Foundation, and the local private landowners and farmers, Lear Cebu aims for a sustainable ecological program regarding coffee farming which could also maintain the area mountains as an ecological system which will support increased habitat for local fauna, help control soil erosion and improve pollination. Since 2015 more than 5000 coffee seedlings with a survival rate greater than 80% have already been planted through this project.

Jesselito V. Baring (PCAPI-7 Foundation Chairman) recognized the support Lear Cebu has extended to the Social Reforestation Program through the Coffee Farming initiative and with Lear Cebu as its partner is looking forward to making Cebu a coffee eco-tourism site where coffee lovers can get a chance to learn more about their favorite beverage.

Coffee is the second most consumed beverage in the world and packed with antioxidants and beneficial nutrients that can improve your health. As a basic commodity, the economic benefits of coffee farming and the coffee industry as whole has significantly increased over the years with more than 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed in the world every day.
