Lear Team,
One of the most historic trials in the history of the United States is over – one that left the world, and particularly communities of color, reliving the trauma of George Floyd’s murder nearly one year ago.
Though former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder, his conviction will not bring Mr. Floyd back to his family or erase the pain and loss that has been experienced by Black and Brown people in America following his murder or countless other similar events.
However, I hope that Mr. Floyd’s family feels that some measure of justice has been served, as this verdict marks one small step on the journey to accountability and fair and equitable protection under the law for everyone.
Mr. Floyd’s murder reignited the movement to recognize and continue the fight to dismantle structural racism. But far more progress is needed. We must continue to work toward reform that results in systemic societal change, and I encourage each of you to join me in embracing that responsibility and committing to being a part of that change.
In solidarity,
